On Friday June 15, 2012 I went to visit the Cotton
District of Starkville Mississippi with my Visualization of Future Human Habitats
class. The focus of our trip was the
architecture of the neighborhood homes and businesses. We began out trek at the old cotton mill
which has now become office buildings. We
were able to see the building original wooden pillars that are no longer used
in construction today. We also saw the
windows on the top floor that provided natural lighting to the workers when the
cotton mill was still in business. At the
end of the old cotton mill tour we learned that the cotton mill is supposed to
become a shopping center and possibly living spaces for Mississippi state
students. Then we moved on to the
neighborhood.
As we walked through the
streets of the Cotton District neighborhood I almost instantly took notice of
the gorgeous architecture that made the many homes and small shops unique. The homes all had that southern feel with a
touch of flavor from a few other cultures. I liked how the houses were small
and how the neighborhood was set up to give the inhabitants a chance to
interact with each other. We got to meet
one of the residents of the Cotton District.
He told us about how nice it was and that small business spots are going
to be added slowly to the main Street running through the Cotton District to add
more entertainment and bring its resident together. We also got to meet Starkville’s mayor and
the Creator of the Cotton District, Dan Camp.
He discussed many thing about the Cotton District such as its
architecture. I really enjoyed the walk
and my favorite part about it was the small, but beautiful homes.
